Sitting Room Decorations
Title
Sitting Room Decorations
Description
An unidentified sitting room. A sitting room was public space within the house where guests were entertained. Artwork chosen for display provided an identity for the family living in the home. The choice of art reflected the family's beliefs. On the floor are oriental rugs and on the back wall is a framed artwork of a Madonna with child. The image is part of the oil painting, Sistine Madonna, by Italian artist Raphael, commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II for the church of San Sisto, Piacenza. The strings in the foreground may be bamboo that is used as a curtain to provide some privacy.
