A living room in the mid-twentieth century. The formal parlor of the nineteenth century was used to entertain guests and to hold family funerals. The role of this room changed in the early twentieth century and room became used for a variety of more lively family activities. The name "parlor" was changed to "living room" in the early twentieth century.
