Title
Tarkington Motor Company
Description
Tarkington Motor Car Company automobile. The Tarkington automobile was a two-door, six-cylinder, gas-powered car built in the early 1920s in Rockford, Illinois. Joseph Arthur Tarkington was unsuccessful in getting the car mass produced. The Tarkington Motor Car Company was incorporated in January 1920 with $500,000 funding. Additional funding was needed for mass production and the company dissolved June 1, 1923. The company made six cars. The Tarkington car pictured may have been made by P. Joseph Petersen, a cement contractor in Rockford, Illinois. Mrs. Petersen owned two of the Tarkington cars. This photograph was taken in the backyard of the Petersen home at 817 First Avenue, Rockford, Illinois.
