Recovery of the Greater Rockford from the Ice Cap.
Title
Recovery of the Greater Rockford from the Ice Cap.
Description
This view shows The Greater Rockford airplane upside down on a snowy ice cap in Greenland. Seven men wearing parkas surround the wing to the right. Two plywood sheets lie in the lower right portion of the photograph. Hassell's autobiography, A Viking with Wings (1987, p. 184) comments on this photo, "Wing removal was a major task before The Greater Rockford could be airlifted from the glacier to the U.S. Air Base at Sondrestrom by Greenlandair helicopter. Recovery ground crew included Scandinavian Airlines System and Greenlandair employees, as well as U.S. Air Force personnel." Handwritten in purple ink by Mary Hassell Lyons (Bert Hassell's daughter) on the back of photograph: "Ice cap - USAF crew - assisting along with SAS-Greenlandair - with recovery."
