Bert Hassell and the Greater Rockford.
Title
Bert Hassell and the Greater Rockford.
Description
Bert "Fish" Hassell leans on a propeller of the Greater Rockford airplane before the first Rockford to Stockholm flight attempt on July 26, 1928. The caption from Hassell's autobiography, A Viking with Wings (1987, p. 66) reads, "Fish Hassell with the SM-1 Stinson Detroiter before its crash in a cornfield delayed the Rockford-to-Stockholm attempt for three weeks. Crash of the fuel-heavy plane caused Hassell to add refueling stops to lessen the takeoff load. The Hassell luck held when the crash failed to touch off the 700 gallons of gasoline."
