The majority of the images are from 1928, which is the year of Hassell's historic Rockford-to-Stockholm flight and his return to a celebratory parade. Although Hassell was forced to make an emergency landing on the Greenland ice cap and did not make it all the way to Stockholm, he did pioneer the Great Circle Route of flying that is commonly used today. </text>

Two plywood sheets lie in the lower right portion of the photograph.  Hassell's autobiography, A Viking with Wings (1987, p. 184) comments on this photo, "Wing removal was a major task before The Greater Rockford could be airlifted from the glacier to the U.S. Air Base at Sondrestrom by Greenlandair helicopter. Recovery ground crew included Scandinavian Airlines System and Greenlandair employees, as well as U.S. Air Force personnel."
