Title
A name given to the resource
Camp Grant, Rockford, Illinois in World War I and World War II
Description
An account of the resource
A collection of postcard views and photographs of Camp Grant. In April 1917 the United States entered the first World War. Immediately the federal government began planning for a dozen new military training camps. In Rockford, Illinois the Chamber of Commerce led a campaign to win a camp for the community.
In June 1917 the War Department agreed to locate an army training camp—Camp Grant-- in Rockford. Camp Grant was located south of Rockford where the Rockford International Airport now sits. Construction was speedy and significant. In three months 1100 buildings went up. By September 1917 the camp was open and receiving thousands of recruits.
With thousands of men residing at the camp throughout the war, Camp Grant improved Rockford’s economy, raised business profits and led to growth of the area overall. The camp would go on to be used during World War II as well but was decommissioned in the years following.

"Lift that Bale" at Nelson Knitting Co.
Description
An account of the resource
The text beside the photograph (right) proclaims, 'Here, we get a peek at Nelson's huge warehouse that is scientifically designed to maintain proper humidity in the yarn. "Curing" of the yarn is an extra care which contributes materially to better knitting, and hence to longer wear. The men in the picture are checking weights, tallying bills of lading and piling yarn.' This photo and text may have been part of a company promotional campaign. Nelson Knitting Co.

Description
An account of the resource
With a sidewalk to the right, trees in the distance, and buildings barely peeking through on the far left, this black and white photograph seems to show the rural vista more than the O. F. Barbour School itself, located at Montague and Holland Streets, on Rockford's West side.
