This collection includes over 300 rare glass plate negatives depicting Rockford life between approximately 1880 and 1910 with most photographs showing scenes and events around the turn of the twentieth century. Included are city street scenes, social groups, sporting activities, homes, businesses, churches, and civil occasions.

D. Fay, a pacer horse owned by Fred Moffatt, poses with its sulky (a lightweight, two-wheeled vehicle for harness racing) and driver in front of a stable. Fred Moffatt, owner of Moffatt Cigar Company, 212 W. State Street, was very active in horse racing. Horse racing was an extremely popular sport in Rockford. This photograph may have been taken at the "driving range" just north of the city limits or at the Fairgrounds. The photo may have been taken at the same time as photos 88.122.708, 88.122.660, 88.122.659c, 88.122.659b, 88.122.659a, 88.122.676, and 88.122.678.
