Description
An account of the resource
Illinois Central Railroad crossing on Seminary Street. Automated gates were introduced in the 1930s to protect cars and pedestrians. Crossing warning signs were not standardized until 1949. Originally wooden crossing gates blocked the entire roadway. After 1950, crossing gates covered only the half of the roadway of oncoming traffic. This allowed vehicles "trapped" within the gates to have a safe escape route.
