The "Wate-A-Wyle" Club was a group of young men who had fixed up old automobiles with imitation racing bodies with no machine costing over $100. These vehicles were used for a comedy race which was at a snail's pace due to the cars often stopping or getting out of gear. The club in Rockford, Illinois imitated the Elgin Road Race which used the same types of vehicles. The Wate-A Wyle Club was popular and was asked to repeat these races in community celebrations in areas surrounding Rockford, Illinois. This image shows a Red Cross banner on the back of a vehicle. It may be present in case of injury during the race.

Illinois first required car owners to register their vehicles in 1907 with owners providing their own license plates until the state issued them in 1911. Front and rear plates were required each year along with an aluminum dashboard disc with the same number as the plate. These discs were discontinued in 1917. 1934 is the first time the state name, "Illinois", is spelled out on license plates with the year of registration. Illinois license plates were annual until 1979 when the state began to issue multi-year plates.

Mr. T.J.M.S. poses in his automobile. Before 1908, almost every car built in the United States had the steering wheel located at the right side of the automobile, following the practice of horse drawn carriages. When the Ford Motor Company launched their Model T in 1908, they changed the location of the steering wheel to the left side to make it easier for passengers to get into the car and avoid oncoming traffic.
